Subject Leader for English – Ruby Gharib

My name is Ruby Gharib and I am the Subject Leader for English. I believe English has the power to open doors, broaden horizons and inspire children to see possibilities beyond their own experiences.

My aim is for every child to develop a genuine love of reading and discover the joy of getting lost in a book. For me, reading is a way to unwind, escape and explore new places, meet new characters and experience different worlds. I want children to experience that same sense of wonder while understanding that reading also opens the door to knowledge and opportunity.

As Dr Seuss said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

I also believe that reading and writing are intrinsically linked. The more children read, the more vocabulary, ideas and inspiration they encounter, giving them the tools to become creative and confident writers. Through the books we share, I want children to discover how authors create characters, build worlds and use language to make readers laugh, wonder, and feel. I want them to take these ideas and use them to create pieces of writing, understanding that their imagination has no limits.

As Roald Dahl said, “If you are going to get anywhere in life you have to read a lot of books.”

My vision is for every child to read with curiosity, develop a rich and ambitious vocabulary, and use the power of words to communicate, create and succeed.
