Subject Leader for Music – Rebecca Cutforth

Hello, my name is Rebecca Cutforth, and I am the Subject Leader for Music at Scartho Gateway Academy. This is my first year leading the subject and I am excited to take on the role and help develop the opportunities children have to experience and enjoy music throughout their time at school.

I believe music has a unique place in a child’s education. It allows children to be creative, express themselves and experience something that can bring people together. Whether it is singing as a class, learning to play an instrument, listening to different styles of music or performing to an audience, there are so many ways for children to get involved and discover what they enjoy.

As Music Lead, I want to help create a curriculum where children are given regular opportunities to listen, perform and create. I want them to be introduced to a wide range of music and develop an appreciation of different genres, cultures and traditions. Alongside developing their musical knowledge and skills, I want children to feel comfortable having a go, experimenting with ideas and sharing their music with others.

For me, one of the most important parts of music is the enjoyment it can bring. I want children to leave Scartho Gateway Academy with positive memories of making music together, whether that is through singing, playing instruments, performing or simply discovering a piece of music they really enjoy. Most of all, I hope to encourage a lasting interest in music that children can continue to explore both in and beyond school.
