Subject Leader for Mathematics – Rebecca Cutforth
Hello, my name is Rebecca Cutforth, and I am the Subject Leader for Maths at Scartho Gateway Academy. This is my first year leading the subject and I am really looking forward to developing my role and helping to continue to strengthen the teaching and learning of maths across the school.
I have always had a strong interest in maths and enjoy seeing children develop their understanding and begin to see the subject as something they can be successful in. I believe maths is an important part of everyday life, and I want children to understand that the skills they develop in lessons have a purpose beyond the classroom. Whether they are solving problems, explaining their thinking or applying their knowledge in different situations, I want children to feel proud of what they can achieve.
My vision for maths is for children to experience lessons that are engaging, purposeful and challenging, while also feeling supported when they find things difficult. I want children to develop a secure understanding of the basics, but also have the opportunity to reason, problem-solve and think mathematically. Making mistakes and having to try again are important parts of learning, and I want pupils to develop the resilience to keep going when they are faced with something they find challenging.
Most importantly, I want children to enjoy maths and develop a positive attitude towards the subject. By the time they leave Scartho Gateway Academy, I want them to have the knowledge, skills and confidence to use maths effectively, both in their future education and in everyday life.
